Dir en grey : “The only thing we know about Chile is that it’s a long country”
They just recently got out of the plane and have already suffered the harassment of the fans, that (as a national custom) were waiting for them at the airport.
As if that wasn’t enough, once arriving at the hotel, they couldn’t take a moment of rest when the time for interviews began. So, tired like they were, they had to bear with us. Thank god they were in a good mood, and we’re very thankful, since luckily during the interview, they showed themselves very nicely and even laughed, as opposed to the image they give when on stage.
In the hotel we talked with Toshiya, the bassist of the band and Shinya the drummer, that despite of his looks that make him seem like he could bite you anytime, is a very, VERY guy calm and speaks with an incredible softness, so much that we have to lean in closer to be able to hear what he says. It’s really hard to believe that it’s the same person that hits on those drums with such a frenzy at each of their live shows.
Toshiya is the opposite of Shinya, very talkative and with a rock attitude but at the same time he’s a simple guy that didn’t have any problem answering the questions that this interviewer tried to make in Japanese.
Without boring you any further, we leave you with what follows, the exclusive interview of Dir en grey for PANIKO.cl.
-It’s the first time that you’ll perform in a country from the south hemisphere. What does it mean to you ?
Toshiya & Shinya : Can you repeat the question ?
-Ehmmm…is the first time that you’ll perform in a country of the south pole (of the globe), what does it mean to you ?
Toshiya : Truth be told we’re very exited for coming to play here. Playing abroad it’s always a good experience because the support of each audience is very different from the one we get in Japan. In addition, (doing stuff) any other way we wouldn’t have ever known anything about Chile.
-Last week we talked to MUCC and they told us that they didn’t know anything about Chile. Do you guys know something about Chile? Anything about Chilean music ? About moais* lastly ?
Shinya : The only thing I know about Chile is that it’s a long country…(laugh)
-Is it normal to hear that Japanese bands mix Japanese and English lyrics ? Why do you do that?
Toshiya : In Japan there are various types of people, and the idea of our music is to try to reach the largest possible types. This way there are things that we want to express in a language in a better way than another. I don’t know about other bands, but at least we try to make our message reach to all kinds of type of people.
-A lot of Dir en grey’s lyrics are full of blood, pain, violence and anger. Is that your vision of the world? You don’t appear to be that violent (at first glance)
Toshiya : You’re right. The truth is that we see the world a bit in that way, but if you think about it, what our music does is to make people think about the contrary, about happy moments and how would life be without them. In that sense what we make with our lyrics is for one, make you aware of what’s wrong and in a certain way to try to cause the opposite effect.
-What do you think about the fact that there are so many Japanese rock fans in Chile?
Shinya : Is something that excites us very much, really, to be able to see the fans and all that. We even know that right now there are people waiting outside the venue, and that’s something that surprises us a lot.
-Actually here there are many tribute bands, or how you call them : Copy bands…
Toshiya : Yes, and that actually has a logic explanation. The fans saw us so far away/unreachable that they made copy bands to be able somehow to make the illusion that bands like us were here, because any other way it was impossible to make yourself an idea of what we sound like live.
But now that’s not necessary anymore since Dir en grey is here (laugh)
-Do any of you have an iPod?
Toshiya : Yes I do
-And what do you listen to at the moment?
Toshiya : Mmm…the last thing I’ve been listening to has been Michael Jackson
-What was the last CD you bought?
Toshiya : When I was in Houston I went into a Wall-Mart and I bought the soundtrack of “This is it”
-Toshiya, now that I see you all normally dressed, your old image came to my mind, when you had a more Visual Kei style. How do you think fans have reacted to this change?
Toshiya : Many people say that we don’t care about what the fans say, but it’s not like that, of course we care. And of course truly speaking I don’t know very well what the fans think about it.
If people ask me why I’ve changed so much, it’s because I get bored very quickly of many stuff and in the end what matters is to do what you really like, and that concerns changing styles, I’m even going to do it right now.
-We know that after lives you guys like to celebrate and go out drinking. What’s your favorite (alcoholic) drink?
Shinya : Me ? Drink…..nothing nothing…..(laugh)….( after thinking for a while)… Tequila!
-Do you have any special plan on celebrating after your show here ?
-Sure! Hahaha..
-What would you say to your Chilean fans a day before your only show in our country?
Toshiya : First of all to make them know that it make us very happy to know that we have fans in a place as far away as Chile and to be able to play for the first time in South America.
Tomorrow we hope to have a good time, we hope the audience will have fun and that the day after they wont stop talking about our show so we’ll be able to come again in the future.
